Can you define true love? Here’s the sincere love story between a television presenter, Ko Min Jung, and her husband, Cho Ki Young, who is a poet. Though it seems odd that a TV presenter married an ordinary poet, no one can badmouth their relationship and their marriage. The Inha Times met KBS show host Ko Min Jung, and she gave us her real love story.

The Inha Times (IT): I heard that you and your husband were on intimate terms since your university years. Would you mind telling us about what it was like when you met your husband for the first time?

Ko Min Jung: Before we began our relationship, he was just a big senior at my club. I met with him several times at some club events, and we finally fell in love with each other. But we kept our love a secret, since I was the president of our club, so I did not want to seem irresponsible.

IT: What were the responses from your acquaintances when you announced the marriage with your poet husband, and how did you feel about those responses?

Ko Min Jung: At first, nobody asked me about his character and how he treated me. Rather, they asked me about his job, financial means, and so on. I felt very bitter. But I trusted my judgement. In fact, was not really important whether they supported our love or not. The main thing was whether we were happy in sharing our lives together. So, I’m really proud of my husband. Without him, I think I wouldn’t be what I am now.

IT: Could you tell me the thing that you think your husband, Cho Ki Young, has helped you with the most?

Ko Min Jung: He really helped me to look at the world in a different way. After that, I could understand the implied meaning of economic and political situations in the headlines of newspapers. My new interests and ways of thinking, though they often wrinkled my brain, helped me to mature.

IT: I heard that your husband influenced your decision to become a TV presenter. Could you tell me the story?

Ko Min Jung: I didn’t decide to become an announcer at a young age. I just wanted to become a person who could provide help and hope for those in earnest need of it. One day, my husband suggested to me to consider becoming a presenter, as through this I would create more opportunities to work with people in need of help. So, I’d made preparations for this career path when I was in senior year.

IT: Can you introduce our readers to the most precious poem that your husband has written?

Ko Min Jung: The poem “A Flag” was written to encourage me when I was doing a lot of work as the president of the club. And the poem “Marriage Proposal” was written when he asked me to marry him. Though he didn’t directly dedicate any other poems to me except those two, he recently told me that he unconsciously brings me to mind in every piece of writing that he does.

IT: I heard that you and your husband were on a TV show together as co-hosts. How was that?

Ko Min Jung: Yes, we did co-host a show, as poet and regular presenter, on the KBS TV programme Married Life. We also appeared together on the travel show Embrace the World. I think these opportunities were given because he is a poet, something different and even special compared with many professions. It was really funny working together with my lover. Being with my husband, there was no sense that I was as work! Rather, it felt more like the cameras were simply recording our daily life. These experiences will remain with us as happy memories.

IT: This is the last question. Do you have any message for Inha University students regarding sincere love?

Ko Min Jung: Everyone has the wish for their lover to see them in a positive way. And they also wish for their lover to love them for who they are rather than judging them by material things. I think the most important thing we have to do is find a companion who we are happy to spend a lifetime with. After finding your soulmate, other relationships with parents or friends will settle automatically, since the emotion of love with your partner overflows to all others in your life.
