Interview with Inha University filmmaking club LightHouse!

The status of Korean films is getting higher and higher as Korean movie 'Parasite' won the best picture at the 92nd Academy Awards. Director Bong Joon-ho of Parasite is acknowledged to have begun filmmaking at the university's film club, and Inha University also has a filmmaking club "Lighthouse," which has a tradition of more than 30 years. Jin Hyung-jin, leader of the Lighthouse Club, and the Inha Times interviewed him.

INHA TIMES (IT): Please introduce briefly about LightHouse.

LightHouse: Hello, we are the lighthouse, the only filmmaking club of Inha University. We are founded in 1988. Our club boasts a long tradition of over 30 years.

IT: When will the lighthouse's regular meeting be held and what do you do for the regular meeting?

LightHouse: We meet every Thursday evening, and during this regular meeting, basic shooting and video training are provided. We also watch movies together through the beam projector in the club room.

IT: Lighthouse is the only club that makes movies at Inha University, so please tell me how you make movies.

Lighthouse: After receiving the scenario of the club member who wants to direct, we select the scenario to be produced in the club by voting. The selected club members become directors and form a team. The production process can be largely divided into three parts. The first step is pre-production preparation. It consists of composing continuity, preparing for art, casting actors, and scouting location. The second step is taking a film. The last step is completion work such as editing, color correction, sound mixing, etc. The completed film will be presented to many audiences, including seniors, acquaintances, and club members, at the end of the year.

IT: Please introduce the representative movie made by the lighthouse.

Lighthouse: The lighthouse shoots two movies each year (varies according to club plans). Last year, we produced about 20 minutes of short films called "Today (Director: Na Seung-hyeop)" and "Consultation (Director: Lee Min-woo)." Among them, 'Today' is a movie based on consideration of time. The subject that can be rather heavy and boring was interestingly solved through the unique character of the three female characters and the fantasy element of time movement.

IT: Please let me know what other activities you do except for making movies in your club.

Lighthouse: Lighthouse has an after party after a regular meeting every Thursday. In addition, we visit Jeonju International Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival together. When there is no film festival, we sometimes go to the movie theater all of a sudden. We also have a freshman reception and MT to get closer to new members. At the end of the year, there is the 'Lighthouse Film Festival', the biggest event of lighthouse.

IT: Please introduce the lighthouse film festival in detail!

Lighthouse: The Lighthouse Film Festival is a regular event held at the end of the second semester every year, and it is a big event that club members plan, promote, and make by themselves, including the venue, concept, and poster of the festival. The festival begins with the opening speech of the leader of the lighthouse and shows films produced and filmed by the lighthouse that year. The film is based on scenarios written by the members and includes all the members from pre-production to editing. We have GV time after the movie is showed. Through Q&A with movie directors and audiences, we have fun time to learn about the movie's intentions, filming episodes, and other things you were curious about, and listen to the behind-the-scenes stories of the movie. Also, there is a prize draw time in between, so if you're lucky, you can get a gift, and there are many snacks to enjoy the festival. The Lighthouse Film Festival is a meaningful time for club seniors who graduated every year to visit and organize their activities for the year. Even if you are not a member of the club, please come to the annual Lighthouse Film Festival!

IT: Lastly, what do you want to say to INHA University students?

Lighthouse: The lighthouse receives new members regardless of age or student number. Even if you don't have expertise in movies, anyone who likes movies is welcome! Please give us a lot of attention!
