Small but true happiness

You must have had some experience of drawing a diary when you were young. There is a person who became a SNS star by drawing a picture diary that we've forgotten. The expression of her trivial daily life through drawing and writing is stirring the sympathy of many people. The Inha Times decided to meet painter ‘Daeun Shim’ who draws her picture diary and upload it to SNS.

The Inha Times(IT): Hello, painter Daeun. Please introduce yourself.

Daeun Shim : Hello, This is creator ‘TodayDaeun’ to remember daily life as a picture that will be forgotten if not recorded. Since 2017, I have been keeping a picture diary steadily, and published the book ‘Today’s Daeun’.

IT : Are there any opportunities to draw a picture diary about your daily life? Also, is there an opportunity to post it on SNS?

Daeun Shim : My self-esteem had dropped as I felt like I was spending my life meaninglessly doing nothing after school break. So, I began to record even the smallest like a funny thing that happened during a day or what had been done by myself. At first, I started to draw simply the clothes I wore that day. However, as I became more and more capable of discovering interesting materials in everyday life, I wanted to keep drawing a lot of things. Therefore, I’ve been consoled that ordinary life is okay, and I wanted to give my consolation to share with SNS too.

IT : What do you think is the most important thing when you are working on a picture?

Daeun Shim : The first must be enjoyable when drawing, and the second should be making someone happy. I'm trying to keep both, but the most important thing I'm trying to do is not to force myself to paint if I'm not enjoyable. In the end, if I don’t enjoy painting, the picture tells that. I don't mean that I have to draw only happy stories. However, I try to draw happy pictures when I'm really happy, and when I'm really angry or sad, I try to draw pictures that match my feelings. I think honest is the most important thing.

IT : What do you think is a special point in your picture diary?

Daeun Shim : Telling the most ordinary story, I think. I have a very personal story about me, and a lot of people sympathize with it. Instead of talking about a very special experience, everyone can sympathize and laugh if I tell a story that everyone has ever experienced before. I think the most normal story is the most universal story. And I try to add a lot of details so that I can appear in the picture. I'm trying to draw places and clothes as close as possible, so that anyone who knows about the space or clothes can recognize them at a glance.

IT : What is your favorite picture diary to date and why?

Daeun Shim : Diaries that used to vent my negative feelings such as anger and depression are more memorable than other stories. I drew diaries about the scars of the gloomy days and racial anecdotes from the trip, which were drawn as a celebration of the 100,000 followers. It's good to feel bad emotions out of me as they come out, but what's better is that people pluck up courage to tell their stories. If people say, 'I've had this kind of hard, annoying situations,' they will feel more comfortable by telling their story. Also I can be comforted by the thought that I'm not the only one who's having a hard time. I am grateful that I can make them have a straight talk.

IT : What was the most impressive episode or difficult part of the painting?

Daeun Shim : The hardest part was, "How far I have to reveal my daily life." There's also a day full of negative emotions, but I can't show all to everyone, even more if there is a grudge against someone in the diary. I found some funny things very hard in the day because I had to draw and upload my picture diary, and I felt guilty because I felt like I was cheating on my true feelings. So, after long consideration, I decided not to draw a diary on a day I didn't want to. When I really want to draw a diary but don't want to show it to someone, I write it in my own notebook. I think I've found a solution of my own.

IT : What is your goal in the future?

Daeun Shim : I'm a person whose life has changed a lot since I began keeping my records in a diary or a notebook. Therefore, I want to share these positive changes with many people. Instead of forcing people like ‘Write a diary, Take notes’, I’d like to give people a guideline on how to do it and how to keep going. So, I’m preparing the YouTube channel that shares the recording method and I would also like to make goods that help people record things more easily.

IT : Finally, do you have anything to say for students who are not definitely sure about their career?

Daeun Shim : You need to know yourself. I think the way you chose because others liked will be exhausted in the end. We've never learned how to focus on things I like, so it will be very hard to find out what I like, hate and want to do. But I think, if you want to make the right choice, you have to try and find out. First of all, I suggest it’s good to think about what you do on your own without being forced by others. It will be even better if you write it on a note! Why you like it? When you want to do it more? Isn’t it too easy for everyone to cream their jeans? If you think hard and cut off the branches of your thought, you can narrow down the choice what you really enjoy. I support everyone!
